Some people have trouble getting the ThermoSmart online. The owl has an angry face, the weather is not displayed properly on the portal and the room temperature on the portal is not the same as on the ThermoSmart.


This is usually a problem with the Wi-Fi modem that is not keeping to the specifications. It seems that ThermoSmart works fine with “genuine” branded routers but it has problems with “give a way” routers from providers. Many people have an airport or such like lying around. If you use that all Wi-Fi problems will soon disappear.


In the end, there are 3 causes stopping Wi-Fi connections from being established:

  1. Entering the wrong password when making the Wi-Fi connection.
  2. A router with which ThermoSmart has problems, mainly older models.
  3. No fixed channel set on your router. The ThermoSmart needs a fixed channel.

Briefly press the reset button on the bottom of the ThermoSmart. Look at the text that is displayed there.


There are two possible outcomes:

  1. If the SSID does not display your network name then you have entered the wrong password when attempting to make the Wi-Fi connection. Here, you can see how to re-connect the Wi-Fi for the ThermoSmart.
  2. If the SSID does display the name of your network and IP address, then the ThermoSmart is having trouble with this older router. Below you can find out how to set your router to make a good connection.


TAKE NOTE: in this situation, you do not have to do anything else on the ThermoSmart. Once the modem is set properly you can unplug the ThermoSmart to re-establish the Wi-Fi connection.



For a good W-Fi connection, it is important your modem is set as follows:

  1. The router must be able to support Wi-Fi b/g. It is preferable to set your modem to Wi-Fi-b/g or Wi-Fi-b/g/n. ‘N’ is only supported on the 2.4 GHz band!
  2. Select a fixed channel; do not allow the modem to automatically select a channel. If you have selected a fixed channel but there are many networks in your vicinity, there is a possibility that the chosen channel has a weak signal and is being suppressed by the environment. You can then try different fixed channels to see where the strongest connection is (some routers also have problems with channel 13 for example).
  3. A DHCP server must be active on the router (or elsewhere in the network).
  4. Instead of the combination mode WPA/WPA2 only use WPA2.
  5. Use PSK (pre-Shared Key) for the encryption.

If the above does not work, we recommend you:

  • Reset your modem to the factory settings.
  • Choose WPA2 with PSK as security and AES (not AES + TKIP) encryption.
